Tobacco has been a part of the history of the United States since colonial times. The settlers that arrived from England began to grow tobacco as part of their farming operations. Tobacco plantations were very plentiful in the south and farmers sold or traded the tobacco for goods and services that they needed. Because of the easy availability of tobacco, people began to use it to smoke.
Through most of the history of the United States, tobacco was used without hesitation by the population. It was also accepted as a part of the normal culture of the country. It was used for enjoyment of the smokers, was used as chewing tobacco and was even used medically. However, not much was known about the long-term effects that smoking had on people.
In the late 20th Century, the medical field began studies to see what effect smoking and smoking products had on people. In the course of these studies, smoking and tobacco use was tied to many health concerns. The usage of tobacco was tied Lung Cancer, Emphysema, Oral Cancer and Heart Disease. These dangers led to the Surgeon General of the United States to mandate warnings be placed on cigarette packages and in advertisements that smoking can pose a danger to people's health.
